Significance of Ganapati festival

  • Every festival celebrated in India has deep significance spiritually and socially. Ganesh Chaturthi is one such festival, that is celebrated with a lot of vigour through the length and breadth of India.

  • During the Indian freedom struggle, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak popularized it as a public festival to foster unity among the people. Thus, the Ganesha festival brought together people from different castes and creed to work for a common purpose. This went a long way in instilling unity and spirit of patriotism among the masses.

  • Ganesha has been given the head of an elephant. The elephant is ever alert, its memory is very sharp. Its passages blaze trails for other animals to go through. Similarly, Ganesha guides everyone in all tasks, big and small. We must learn to be such a path maker for others in life.

  • When Sage Vyasa requested Ganesha to write the Mahabharata, he readily agreed without delay. We must follow his path and be ever ready to help others. He even broke his tooth (known as Ekadanta) to serve as a writing tool in order to avoid delay. We must learn to make sacrifices for the welfare of society.

  • By circumambulating his parents instead of going around the three worlds, Ganesha teaches us that our parents are our world. He was declared the winner and received the fruit of knowledge from his father.

  • By making the tiny mouse his vehicle, Ganesha demonstrates that everything big and small has value and we must embrace diversity in God’s creation.
